UTM-Proton to Collaborate in developing hybrid and green technology

Proton Holdings Berhad will commercialise the first product developed by UTM researchers by the first quarter of 2011.

Both parties signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on August 17th in which UTM agreed to attach one of its professors at Proton to conduct full time research to strengthen Proton’s research capabilities.

The Managing Director of Proton Group, Datuk Syed Zainal Abidin Syed Mohamed Tahir said that through this MoU, UTM will be taking the task of producing 40 intellectual properties for Proton starting this year to 2013.

The Managing Director also said that through this collaboration, Proton hopes to strengthen itself as a competitive automotive company and to develop high quality human capital to spur Malaysia towards a developed nation by 2020.

UTM was awarded the National Intellectual Award for the organisation category in 2006, 2009 and 2010. This initiative will drive further efforts in Intellectual Property (IP) development in the form of patent, copyright and industrial design where UTM is targeting to generate ten IPs a year.
